8 Ways our Family has Benefited from Homeschooling

Homeschooling is a JOURNEY. I have been doing it for 5 years now. Some days run perfectly and smoothly, while others run full of chaos and strife! Nevertheless, we do not grow weary, because God is on our side and we draw our strength from Him. I know that everyone’s journey looks different, so I cannot pretend that this is for everyone (because it isn’t). So, for now, this has been our calling and we do our best! This journey has been totally worth it! Hard, and WORTH IT. I love getting to learn alongside of my children. The joy of learning something new is exciting! Not to mention, I am being refreshed and remembering the things I have long forgotten from my own childhood education! It’s super cool. Even when I don’t have all of the answers, we ask ourselves the questions again and look on the internet to find the answers! We also visit our local library and talk to various people more specialized in the matter. It’s all about the research and the JOURNEY.

  1. I am learning more about my children individually, everyday. I get to see where their strengths and weaknesses are and in what subjects or abilities.
  2. I know that I previously said this, but I will say it again.. I GET TO LEARN WITH THEM! I am a nerd and I love to learn new things with my kids! Astronomy- Study of Planets, Ornithology- Study of Birds, Science, History, Missionaries, Nature, Math, Writing,  English Grammar, Biographies, Chemistry, Physics, Biology… YOU NAME IT. I want to learn it too. I think it’s very important to model that in front of our kids. The world is full of cool stuff!
  3. We get schoolwork done, so that there isn’t any to complete in the afternoon! No schoolwork! Yay! Only playtime when dad gets home!
  4. I can clean the house while they are working on their writing work. After our lesson time (where we read and study our specific everyday stuff together), we split up and as they are writing, I am completing housework like: washing/folding clothes, loading the dishwasher, organizing, dusting, vacuuming, etc..
  5. We go on field trips together or with other relatives, and with other homeschooling families! I look at the things we will be learning for the following year, and plan field trips according to our studies. It’s important to me that I am modeling the desire to learn about our world, through our field trips. This is fun and it’s great bonding time too! We also talk about the cost involved and we pack our lunches. (Nothing is free and I also want them to learn to be grateful for all of the hard work their father does.)
  6. They have more opportunities to spend time with grandparents or great-grandparents, and to visit older people in senior living facilities. Grandparents & great-grandparents are special! I REALLY want my children to develop a respect for gray-headed people :). So many young people can overlook them, and not realize the wisdom they may have because of what they have experienced throughout their lives. We have visited senior-living facilities and to see the expression on their faces, when younger people come through to visit, is unforgettable. I often think, “If I were here, I would want someone to come visit me too.” <3 We should spend time with them and listen to their stories. They do get lonely… My children also love to help their nana & papa in doing yard work and running errands with them. This is great quality time too :).
  7. They go with me to run errands and learn responsibility.  If there is something that I need to do they go with me. If I need to grocery shop, visit the chiropractor, pay bills, run to the post office, or volunteer- they are right there in the middle of it. One day, they will be doing these same things. It teaches responsibility. What better way to show them this,  such as having them take our payment into the local electric company, so that our bill is paid and our power stays on……..
  8. They can get their writing work done more quickly. Because I am only focused on schooling my children (there’s only two of them), we get our work done fast, then they go play! For example: If they were at public school it would take longer for them to accomplish this, because there are more kids to school in the classroom. There would be more questions, bathroom breaks, taking time to line up all the kids to go to lunch, P.E., or the library…

I hope you have benefited from this little bit of information that I’ve shared! It’s only 8 of the many reasons that I love to homeschool! <3 I like being with my kids. A. Lot. 🙂
